The Salem Water Department has concluded a review of the entire water system to identify possible lead service lines. This was in accordance with federal guidelines that require the removal and replacement of lead lines. The map below displays the conclusions. The information comes from a combination of historic property data, construction records, town regulations, and results from meter inspections. We will continue to update the map as more information is available.
The good news is we have not identified any lead in the private side of the system. For the unknowns in the public side, Salem will be working on a schedule to be approved by NHDES to positively identify the material and replace it if necessary.
The portion of the water service line that is public and owned by Municipal Services runs from the water main in the street to the curb box (water service shutoff valves, usually located in the right of way between the water main and the building). The remainder of the line that connects from the curb stop to the building is considered private property. The map displays findings for each segment.
