Captains Pond Watershed Management Plan

The Town of Salem, in partnership with the Captains Pond Protective Association and the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, is working to develop a watershed management plan to address water quality concerns and cyanobacteria blooms in Captains Pond.

In 2023, the Town developed a Preliminary Watershed-Based Plan (WBP) and Phosphorus Source Identification Report (PSIR) for the portion of the Captains Pond Watershed within Salem to address ongoing concerns for water quality. Pollution sources such as pet waste, stormwater, and sediment can cause dangerous cyanobacteria blooms.

What will the plan include?

- Expansion of study area to include portions of watershed in Atkinson, NH and Haverhill, MA

- Identification of pollutant sources

- List of management measures needed to meet pollutant source reductions

- A plan for implementation

- Public engagement and participation

- Preliminary (30%) Design of a structural Stormwater Control Measure (SCM)
